Exciting Changes To The Emma Edit

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing good. This is just a little post to update you on the changes to my blog.

This is actually the second or third time I have done a post similar to this one! On WordPress, I was on the personal plan but it was due to expire very soon, so I decided to upgrade to the premium plan. I’m not sure why, but going self-hosted doesn’t appeal to me, so upgrading to the premium plan was a step in the right direction for me. When I upgraded, I got a discount so that was a bonus.

If you read my post ‘How To Spring Clean Your Blog In 5 Easy Steps‘, then you’ll remember me saying not to change your blog branding too often, well, I have ignored my own advice here. This is the third time I have rebranded my blog in a year- I promise this is the last time (hopefully!). I just felt like the new upgrade and new year called for a fresh start.

I feel like I didn’t have a logo before; I just had a header with my name that matched my colour theme (grey and burgundy). I have now designed a logo with help from my saviour, Canva. I decided to keep it plain and simple- do you like it? I have also changed my colour theme to blue and white.

When you upgrade to the premium WordPress theme, you have unlimited access to all the theme’s you have to pay for individually on the personal plan. I 100% thought I was going to take advantage of this and deck my blog out with a new theme, but I decided to keep the same one in the end (Buttons 2). I played around with lots of them, but none floated my boat.

I like the ‘Buttons 2’ theme because I like the fancy edging it adds to the featured images on the homepage. I’m also just very familiar with it, and I find it easy to navigate and change things around when I need to. In my opinion, it’s the perfect no-frills WordPress theme.

I have cut down on the number of social media widgets I had in my sidebar; I feel like it looked too messy, so I have added a social media icon bar instead.

Since upgrading, I am now able to monetize my blog- yay! I have opted in for WordAds, but I’m not sure if it’s staying yet; I need to research it more. If you have any pointers on this matter, then please let me know in the comments.

Another bonus is that I can now add videos to my blog posts to add another dimension. I have plans to buy a new camera, so I might even start YouTube- watch this space! I just think it would be nice to upload a video sometimes to make things more interesting.

The final change is that I have signed up with Ko-fi. Basically, it’s a website for creators to use that allows your readers to leave you a small donation as a thank you for the content. It is done by treating the person to a metaphorical coffee for £3 through Paypal. I have added a cute little coffee cup picture link in the sidebar (not that I’m actually expecting anything). Just imagine me sitting here with a tip jar!

I hope you like my changes!

  1. Love it! Looks really fresh and clean. I’m struggling a bit with WordPress at the moment as I can’t get any data out of it as I can’t add in any analytics widgets on personal…this is where my total lack of tech skills sucks. X

  2. Very exciting!
    New Year, new start.
I like the new logo, highlights ‘Emma’ too.
Get the ball rolling with the videos, I think it would be good with your blog.

PS it’s not always bad to ignore your own advice, sometimes the moment just works 😜

  3. I love your branding! I am trying to save up to be able to afford to upgrade to premium myself. I think changing your branding at least once a year is actually a good idea, as it keeps things fresh. Our moods and inspirations are constantly changing, so why not let that reflect in our branding/blog style? ❤

  4. I have one premium and one personal plan and no plans to go self-hosted either! I don’t do video, but it’s fun having the chance to embed audio files such as my podcast episodes and switch things up a bit. All the best for your website in 2018, and thanks for the tip with Ko-fi!

    1. I’m not the only one who doesn’t plan on going self-hosted then- personally, I think it seems like a lot of work for what it’s worth. I hope Ko-fi works out well for you. Thank you for the coffee Kirsty! 😀

I’d be interested to know if you feel the upgrade was worth it? And you’d recommend doing it? But I guess it’s a bit too soon for that at the moment.
